Ever wonder what would happen if an asteroid or a comet hit your hometown? Well, thanks to the Internet, there are ways to scratch that itch--digitally, anyway. As Vox. Armchair apocalyptics can pick a target at random--or, if they're feeling particularly vengeful, choose specific impact locations. We decided to play around with the tool for a bit.

The results are not exactly calming utterly terrifying. A medium-sized asteroid around three times the size of fire witch powers football field hitting Denver, for instance, would leave all of downtown in an impact crater, and most of the remaining steel buildings in the rest of the city would be knocked down. Further out, clothing would ignite, and much of Colorado's population center would experience first-degree burns. If a similarly-sized asteroid landed in the middle of New York City's Central Park, steel buildings would be knocked over all the way to Newark.

An impact crater would cover most of Manhattan. Fatalists not content with killerasteroids' simpler interface may want to give Purdue's "Impact Earth" calculator a gander. The tool permits users to fine-tune everything, from projectile density to impact velocity. For those not bent on destroying the Earth, there's Asteranka fascinating interactive 3D model that has mapped out and animated the trajectory of major asteroids in our solar system. Users can follow Earth's orbit around the sun, watching as the planet narrowly dodges objects, or they can select individual asteroids and track their orbits as they arc from the outer reaches of the solar system toward the sun.

We carried out a series of three-dimensional 3D hydrocode simulations of the Chicxulub impact event to study how the impact angle affects the results of impact events. Melting and vaporization occur primarily in the downrange direction for oblique impacts, due to asymmetries in the strength of the shock wave with respect to the point of impact.

The results can be used to scale the information from the available vertical simulations to correct for the angle of impact. A comparison of a 3D vertical impact simulation with a similar two-dimensional 2D simulation shows good agreement between vertical 3D and 2D simulations. Now, researchers studying the resulting Chicxulub crater have created a stunning animation to show that the object that hit the planet may have slammed nearly all the way through the Earth's crust. After the asteroid had hit, the researchers believe that the Earth would have behaved like a 'slow-moving fluid'. Large craters often have rings of hills, known as 'peak' rings in their centre.

But studying these is difficult, as they mostly exist on extraterrestrial rocky bodies, and are difficult to access. To overcome this issue, the researchers look at the Chiczulub crater, in Mexico, which was the result of a huge asteroid crash, 66 million years ago.

The crater represents the only intact peak ring on Earth, which has not been eroded. The animation shows how the impact caused the Earth's surface to slosh back and forth like a liquid. The finding could help explain how impacts can change the faces of planets, and how collisions can create new habitats for life.

Other rocky planets in our solar system, such as Mars, differ, as weather and plate tectonics have little effect on the surface. Mr Gulick said: 'The key driver of surface changes on those planets is constantly getting hit by stuff from space. The researchers, from Imperial College, London and the University of Texas at Austin, hoped to learn more about the impact effects found on other objects in the solar system. To lead to a global catastrophe, an asteroid or comet only has to be big enough to launch large amounts of dust in to the atmosphere. That leads to the abrupt change in climate that wipes out species. The odds of a major asteroid impact are very small. But the risk of you dying in an asteroid impact might be higher than you think.

Because while the odds of an impact are small, the number of people who would be killed is so high that the risk impact odds times the number killed isn't negligible.
