It is NOT an automatic fold-over, you must manually lift the element up out of the socket and lay the antenna whip down in order to enter garages, parking structures etc…. It is important that you lift the whip completely up and out of the socket before folding the hinge. The hinge rotates deg inside the socket so it will fold in the direction needed.

Many Chinese and other look-a-like antennas have very annoying problems associated with their fold-over hinges. The most common is a weak spring. The antenna lifts up and out of the socket all by itself at highway speeds!

The antenna is unusable when it is laying down and most users need to defeat the hinge or constantly adjust the angle to keep it vertical. The weak spring was almost always a problem with the larger antennas so Comet engineers went to work and re-designed the fold-over.

Our larger antennas now have a threaded collar around the hinge: Loosen the collar, lift it up, and the hinge is exposed. No more problem. If you are tired of your antenna folding over by itself at highway speeds, choose an authentic Comet brand antenna. Particularly used in a city or area where the repeater sites are generally higher than the mobile station due to the pattern having an uptilt.

The CA-2x4SR is a broad-band antenna designed for those needing voice communications on the ham radio, public service, land mobile, and FRS frequency ranges. When the amateur radio community is working together with local search and rescue and other public service agencies, the CA-2x4SR antenna allows TX and RX capability in both bands!

The coverage area and gain provided by the CA-2x4SR is remarkable.

Whether used on VHF or UHF or both, it is an asset to the communications needs of amateurs and land mobile users simultaneously.

Because these antennas are used by Search and Rescue teams off-highway as much as they are for traditional on-highway use, customers have often asked if Comet would ever make a spring that could be used with them to add some flexibility. Rather than include the spring in every antenna, they made it an optional item that can be added to an existing antenna without the expense of purchasing a completely new antenna.

Adding the spring does not change the SWR or performance but will help it survive brushes with tree branches, low clearance structures, etc…. Ray is a former Fire Captain, you can also want to ask him about the time his fire station caught fire…but he may want to change the subject pretty quickly!

Typically this antenna is the choice when it will be mounted on top of a truck, van, or other high profile vehicle. The height of the mounting location improves the antennas range, but also makes it susceptible to damage from low clearance obstructions.

Customer Reviews. Before getting this antenna over a year ago I had two antennas, one cut for amateur and one for public safety, that I would change out as needed. Now I am a very satisfied owner of this antenna. Real world performance has been more than satisfactory. The folding base needs illustration. At first I was sure my antenna didn't have that feature, and so were my SAR teammates until I folded their antennas for them. I am buying another of these antennas now because my first snapped in half in a carwash someone forgot to fold it down.

It is my understanding that an antenna made for a specific frequency may out perform a dual or wide band antenna. Notwithstanding, no mention is made of the environmental conditions during the separate testing times, which of course could also make a difference in transmission performance.

We have been able to communicate over distances in excess of 20 miles utilizing UHF under the base to mobile situations. Of course there is a lot to be said about the Comet antenna being used in our application.Forums New posts Search forums.

Are both brands decent? I know we can get very specific for each application and radio but I just am trying to get a feel for the quality of each brand as a whole. Primary usage would be HT. Is there any better brands to consider at this price point? Thank you. Cheep crappy Chinese antennas. Some are not even the frequencies listed. Both Diamond and Comet are reputable companies. I have to stick with a single antenna. Using a commercial dual band whip, are there any decent ground plane mounts with N connectors for base station use?

N2NJOApr 4, Are not those 'discones' pretty broad banded? A friend of mine has one he uses for all sorts of freqs, he uses one for the gov repeater for sky warn and 2 metersprobably will have to use another antenna for the mhz unless someone makes dual band discone.

A discone provides continuous coverage, but is not a gain antenna. As long as you don't need a lot of gain, they work good. I've used the radio shack discone for 2m and and K6GBApr 5, Last edited: Apr 5, W9GBApr 5, I don't find anything quickly in the way of dual band antennas for those commercial bands.

I think the G series would be the highest gain models. But, not satisfied with the performance. Questions; 1. Doesn't the proximity of two verticals as close to what they are with those 'J poles' interfere with one another?

How does a dual band antenna compare to, two single band antennas joined by a combiner splitter in reverse? Ok, how is this design compared to the standard, typical discone 'top hat' design??Your JavaScript appears to be disabled.

Posted 11 August - PM My current antenna is attached to my roof on an old existing directv mount that was already on roof and grounded, I'm hoping the new comet will swap right in with the to n adapter and I wont need to much else. For me the verdict is still out. Mine has not been permanently installed yet.

So either I have some technical equipment issues or the antenna still needs more elevation to get past the trees without loads of power. Trying to figure out how to get it higher in a temporary fashion before I commit to a purchase for permanent installation rigging.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk. This past weekend I received my new SWR meter and wanted to see how the antenna faired. On the MHz frequencies it was a consistent 1. I then had a local ham friend use his meter as a means of validating mine. The results were effectively the same.

So in the end, it is good to know that the one I received was very well tuned at the factory given it is not easily field adjustable. Curious to know yours fairs. Sign In Need an account?
