I mean the unseen changes in your skin cells caused by ultraviolet radiation from the sun, otherwise known as UVA and UVB rays. What is sun damage? If you boil it down, there are three levels of sun damage:. One of the features of sun damage is collagen degradation. UV exposure—even just a little bit—results in increased levels of an enzyme in the body called matrix metalloproteinase-1 aka MMP-1which is a primary factor in the breakdown of collagen.

In general, the ageing process is marked by a number of symptoms which can all be traced back to the breakdown of collagen. These molecules are famed for keeping your skin hydrated as well as cross-linking with collagen and elastin to make your skin firm and taut.

Skin that has aged without sun exposure contains low levels of GAGs. UV exposure will get you to that same state, but much faster. Finally, you can expect to see sun damage show up in the skin in the form of thread veins, aka telangiectasiawhich are the clusters of veins near the surface of the skin that look like little road maps.

As the collagen and GAG levels go down, the skin becomes thinner and loses its elasticity. Thin skin means you can see the subdermal veins more easily. Inelastic skin means that when those veins enlarge—perhaps through exercise, heat exposure, or drinking—the skin is less able to spring back and compress the veins back to their normal size. Thread veins tend to show up more as you get older, whether or not you are exposed to the sun, but UV exposure will speed up the process.

Once you enter stage two, however, you start to see the symptoms of prolonged UV exposure. It could be lentigo simplexbut it could also be the result of a virus; so, if in doubt, go see a doctor. Solar comedones appear in later age between 60—80 years old and are far more common in men.

Since they are due to UV exposure, you tend to see them in combination with the thick, yellow skin characteristic of solar elastosis ; this combination is called Favre-Racouchot syndrome.

Actinic keratoses form after years of exposure to the sun. Solar elastosis is a hallmark of advanced photoageing. The dermis is the layer of skin just underneath the epidermis; the epidermis being the outermost layer you can see and touch.

What all this means is that the fibres become bunched up and tangled, resulting in thick and leathery skin. These are much deeper and more noticeable than the wrinkles you get from normal ageing. I should point out that there are some very well-respected practitioners out there who are challenging the established orthodoxy that sun damage significantly speeds up the ageing process and, indeed, not all the studies out there are unanimous in their conclusions about the effect of UV exposure on skin ageing.Botox — or botulinum toxin A if you want to get technical — is one of the best-known drug names in the world.

It is, however, the best-known brand of wrinkle-relaxing injections and the one most commonly used by practitioners. Botox is extremely popular in the aesthetics world due to its relatively cheap cost compared to a surgical face-lift, for examplereliable results, minimal pain level, and the short time it takes to perform the procedure.

Is Botox safe? As its full name suggests, Botox is a toxin. However, because of its toxic nature and widespread usage, there have been a lot of studies done to ensure its safety.

It is widely accepted that, when administered by a skilled and responsible practitioner, you have nothing to fear. How does Botox work? The toxin interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses that tell muscles to contract. It does this by blocking the acetylcholine receptors in the muscle. Botox reduces the ability of these muscles to contract, so it can soften frown lines, or lift downturned corners of the mouth.

The product is injected into the muscles responsible for making these expressions, to weaken them for three-six months, which in turn will, for example, soften your frown lines, or lift downturned corners of the mouth. What can Botox be used for? For more uses, including Botox as a treatment for depression, download my full Botox factsheet.

Where can I get Botox? Botox is a prescription-only drug, so has to be supplied by a medical professional who is qualified to prescribe — in the UK, that means a doctor, a surgeon, a dentist, or a nurse-prescriber a qualified nurse who has taken a further course to become a non-medical prescriber.

Prescribing pharmacists can also prescribe Botox, and many are taking training courses in injecting the toxin, too. The injections can legally be given by someone working under the supervision of that qualified professional, though the prescriber is the one who takes responsibility for the treatment. The makers of Botox — and the makers of other wrinkle-relaxing toxins such as BoCouture, Dysport and Azzalure — are scrupulous about only supplying their products to medical professionals.

Does that mean that the system is watertight? Unfortunately not. How much does Botox cost? Bear in mind that prices at prestigious clinics at prestigious addresses, like Harley Street in London, will be higher than elsewhere.

The initial consultation is a longer process which is a good thing and one of the hallmarks of a good practitioner so set aside an additional minutes for your first time.

I would always recommend always booking in for a review two weeks after treatment, by which time the full effects of the treatment will be showing. That way, if you end up with, say, one eyebrow arching higher than the other, your practitioner can make a small adjustment to even things out. Most practitioners will not charge you for this review appointment, and you can always cancel it if you are happy with the way your face is settling down.

How long does Botox last? Botox lasts from two to six months, depending on how much is used and the level of muscle activity in the area. An average treatment will last for three months. A stronger treatment of more toxin will give a more obvious result i.They are mostly temporary. They are not cosmetic surgery.
