By Bridie Pearson-jones For Mailonline. A crafty mother who invented a bracelet to track her baby's movements in the womb revealed how she turned the idea into a business. While pregnant with her son four years ago, Louise Macleod, 31, from Telford, Shropshire, was eager to monitor how often her baby was moving. This information is important as it helps medical staff gauge the health of the baby in the womb.
Using her love of crafting, Louise came up with the idea to create a simple beaded bracelet with a loop that could be moved one bead over from the 'starting' bead each time the baby moved. Pictured, with her son, who was born in Louise told FEMAIL: 'This has been a really great project to be involved in, and I'm really pleased that my small idea will hopefully help hundreds of women to have successful pregnancies, and reassure and support them during this time.
Each bracelet includes a small loop and sterling silver or gold-plated sterling silver charm which the mother slips across each bead every time your baby moves. The white freshwater pearl marks the start of the counting process and represents where to start the loop each morning. Every time the baby moves, the mother moves the loop over the next bead, working its way around the bracelet. Once the end bead is reached, the mother can then work your way back to the start. The number can be noted down at the end of the day to build an overall picture which is valuable to midwives and hospital staff.
The bracelet provides busy expectant mothers on-the-go with an easy way to count the number of times their baby has moved that day.
This figure can then be noted down and used to build an overall picture of the baby's movement, which is useful information to be able to provide the midwife. When women notice changes to the pattern, they are encouraged to seek advice from their medical team.
Eighteen months after her son was born, Louise started working as the Maternity Voices Partnership Coordinator for NHS Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Groups CCGs and became involved in a local campaign to raise awareness of the importance of women being aware of their babies' movements in the womb.
With overwhelmingly positive feedback and glowing reviews, a few short months later the bracelet was given the go ahead to be developed further to enable more women to benefit.
She admitted herself to hospital a week before her due date after she noticed her unborn child's activity had drastically slowed down.
The mother-of-two claims her daughter may have died due to complications she experienced during her pregnancy, but the fate was avoided by her early admission and induced birth. Primary school teacher Lyndsey safely gave birth in October to Emily Thompson, now seven months, weighing a healthy 6lbs 14oz. Louise Macleod, 31, from Telford, came up with the idea for the ASKA Maternity Movement Bracelet, as an easy way to monitor her baby's daily movements when she was pregnant with her son.
From a swish to a roll and from a kick to an elbow poke these are all classed as movements. It is important for expectant mother's to notice patterns in these movements and if you notice their baby is moving less than usual or if you have noticed a change in the pattern of movements, it may be a sign that your baby is unwell.
